About Our Dexter Cattle
Call us about cows, cow/calf pairs and heifers for sale. We only have a few each year.
Hanover Dexter Cattle Company at Rockin B Ranch was founded in 2004. We are a small family-owned ranch located in eastern Colorado comprising 105 acres. Our herd grew to approximately 30 head of Irish Dexter cattle but droughts in recent years have forced us to reduce. However, since we add about six to eight calves each year the herd continues to grow.
Dexters have only three different genes for color: black, dun and red. Black is the predominant color with red being the rarest. We have all three colors in our herd and our herd bull is polled red, which is the rarest combination. We are breeding for polled animals (without horns) since we like the look of polled cattle and find it is easier to move freely about our herd even in smaller spaces without a concern for encountering a horn in the moving about. As with the red color, polledness has to be bred into the herd. It requires that both sire (bull) and dam (female cow) have a polled gene that matches up in order for the calf to be polled. This means that our polled cattle are in the minority of Dexter cattle in America. However, these are issues to consider only if you are shopping for Dexters to add to your herd or are interested in purchasing your first Dexter. If on the other hand you are looking for the finest beef around for your dinner table, the color of the Dexter does not matter. Please see the Meat Purchase page.
We started our herd with two red heifers (unbred females) “imported” from Oregon. Since then we have added a number of dun and black cows and heifers. We are always on the lookout for quality animals to supplement our herd. Our goal has always been to raise top quality Dexters with exceptional conformation, fleshiness, disposition and the ability to subsist exclusively on grass and forages without supplemental grain. We bred our cows initially through artificial insemination but in 2008 added a polled red bull from a herd in Nebraska who passed his gentle disposition and fleshiness on to his progeny. We have just recently purchased a great homozygous polled red bull calf that will only sire polled calves since he only carries the polled gene. We have some of Brickhouse’s calves on the ground and look forward to their development.
As we started our operation, one of our first challenges was to find the best way to graze our herd on the 100+ acres while reducing the need to supplementally feed hay and the risk of overgrazing. We settled on the Management Intensive Grazing technique (MIG). Basically we subdivided our acreage into 12 paddocks (or small pastures) and move the herd every 5 to 7 days. This method not only allows the vegetation to recover from the grazing but also causes the better grasses to thrive and flourish in much the same way as Great Plains did during the grazing of the large roving buffalo herds. We are very pleased that our pastures have improved each growing season and our cattle are enjoying the green grass as well. In spite of a severe drought in 2008 our pastures are in better shape today than they have ever been! What a joy it is to know that we are working to improve the land, raise cattle humanely, and providing a wonderful family cow and expectional eating experience for folks across the country. We regularly receive calls and emails from folks who have read about Dexters and would like some more information. We have helped a number of small acerage ranchers in the area start their own herd. New farmers from Oklahoma to Kansas and Nebraska to California now have cattle in their herd that were born on Rockin’ B Ranch! Folks from as far away as Georgia and North Carolina have called or emailed with questions ranging from breeding to meat production to fencing. We do not milk our cows but have some information about milking and contacts that can provide even further assistance. Feel free to contact us with any questions you have, either by email or call 719-683-8636, and we will try to help as best we can.
